We may be in the throes of an unprecedented presidential election, but we also have much to celebrate! Last week, New York state legislators announced new proposed regulations for the development of quality control standards and licensing programs for hemp-derived CBD products.
The move in Albany, New York’s capitol city, was largely inspired by the extreme increase in popularity of CBD and hemp-derived products in recent months. The regulations aim to address the need for generally-accepted standards to safely process cannabinoids. This is an important evolution since so far, the only federal regulations that have been passed have focused on the growing of hemp, but not the processing of CBD within those hemp plants.
Not only do the proposed regulations include processing and quality standards, they also seek to establish a system to allow hemp-derived cannabinoids to be used safely in certain foods, beverages, topicals and dietary supplements.
“These regulations are the next step toward regulating the growing hemp industry in New York in a way that protects consumers and helps ensure the industry’s long-term viability,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated.
The CBD industry still may be restricted on how we can market or discuss CBD and its benefits, at least until the FDA rules further on the matter. We are hopeful, though, that this effort in New York State will continue to move this important needle.
